The Cedar Waxwings have been having a great time around the yard this summer and I’ve been having a great time watching them! Sometimes their behavior makes me laugh out loud and often its when I’m trying to take photos and I need to be quiet and still. When the juveniles begin to fly they often fall from branches that are too small to support their weight. I watch as they fall branch to branch clinging on to the tips of the small branches until they eventually grab a strong enough branch and stop. It’s a lot like watching a pinball game – only much more fun and much more exciting (and they are SO much cuter than a metal ball to be sure!).
Today the juvie’s were in various trees, watching each other (and their parents) fly from tree to tree and back again. I was taking a few pictures from a stationary spot in the yard when one little guy who was sitting comfortably up in my cherry tree became alert to a commotion in another tree nearby (it turned out to be a squirrel). He went into the ‘tall thin‘ posture and I couldn’t help it – I laughed – he was very cute and it was quite funny but I still managed to snap before and after photos to share with you below.
And what did Mama Cedar think of this impressive display??
Have you ever had a nosy old neighbour – disapprovingly peering into your yard to see what you have been up to in your garden? This one is hard to be miffed at…lol
I just love these guys, I’m gonna miss them in the winter, but something to look forward to in Summer 2016…
Here’s a few more portraits of the Cedars on the morning side of life …. until next time!
