White Crowned Sparrows, Blue Jay & Finches

This has been a great month for birding in my yard! This week I saw this beauty of a Blue Jay in one of my trees – the color just grabs me, I love blue!

Here is a lifer for me, a white crowned sparrow (male) was poking around in the shrubs with the house sparrows looking for seeds. The white caught my eye – and I’m glad it did! Another one for the yard list!

I never tire of the beautiful house finches, and I’m especially attracted to the orange ones, and I love the rain!

It’s a Lifer (feeling spoiled this summer) Tennessee Warbler

I’m feeling blessed to have seen so many birds in my own backyard this summer… especially ones I’ve never seen before, such as the case with this little Tennessee Warbler who flitted about my trees for a couple of days – just long enough for me to snap a few shots and ID another lifer :)

American Redstart: It’s a Lifer!

This is the first American Redstart I’ve ever seen and positively identified :)  It’s an interesting name that matches the male bird perfectly but the female or juveniles? Not so much!

I wish I could have taken a video of the way it flew from tree to tree – showing off her tail… probably the prettiest small bird flight I’ve seen.  I love my backyard. Blessed.

It’s a Lifer! Blackpoll Warbler

Oh Happy Day!

I’ve never really watched for warblers in my past years of birding, I was mainly focused on owls, shore birds and other medium-large birds… but this year I am noticing all of the tiny birds that you almost won’t notice if you don’t look for them on purpose.  This gorgeous little number was hard to photograph but she finally took a second or two at a slower pace through the branches and I got my shot.  It’s a Blackpoll Warbler in fall plumage.  A lovely bird to add to my yardlist. :)

Backyard Birding Today: Another Lifer!

I’ve been hearing the call of a Blue Jay in the area for a week now but have not managed to capture him with my camera yet.  Today was my lucky day – he stopped in my tree for a second and then he was gone.  Blue is my favorite color – so I have a penchant for blue birds…. <3

Here is a new one for me! It’s my first time seeing an Ovenbird – he was in the trees by my backyard.  When I called my friend all excited that I finally captured an Ovenbird – she said “do you mean like a chicken or a turkey?”  HA HA!  Ovenbirds are named so because of the type of nest they build – the are like little mud ovens.  I watched a documentary on them once – its really quite amazing how they build their nests and the ‘secret’ room they put inside to keep the babies safe.

The color of this Wilson’s Warbler against the color of the tree is eye-popping here…
