It’s a Lifer! Willow Flycatcher

This afternoon I saw something new – a bird I did not easily id – hopping around in a neighbouring tree.  He was delightful to watch – twisting his head around watching little bugs fly by.  After getting some ID help from a friend I discovered it was a life lister for me!  So excited!  Flycatchers are difficult to distinguish from each other!

It’s a Lifer! Olive-Sided Flycatcher

Hark! The Herald Olive-Sided Flycatcher sings!

On top of the pine tree – against the sun – making for a difficult photograph – but a Life Lister none the less!   I saw this rather large bird flying about the tops of the trees – but since I was watching it and squinting against the sun, I was having trouble identifying him by silhouette alone.  I heard the song ‘quick three beers’ and then managed to snap him from a distance when he perched on the pine.  I had to go inside and look through my books for a positive ID and then confirmed he was indeed an Olive-Sided Flycatcher – a first ever for me – yippee! 😀

This is the first time I’ve ever seen this bird – and it thrills me that he was right outside my backyard!  #birdnerd
