A Whirlwind of Goldfinches

Early this morning as the sun was just up I heard a commotion in the backyard, a commotion of the bird kind… singing, squawking, chirping and peeping so I stepped outside with my camera (what else would I do? lol).

To my surprise and delight a group of American Goldfinches had stopped in my yard (on their way south I presume) and took over the feeders and trees.  They were so loud and so fast I took photos quickly and within 5 minutes they were gone – it was the craziest thing!  Just came in with a bang and left just the same – never to be seen again! (this season anyway..)

Here are a few photos from my whirlwind goldfinch visit….

White-breasted Nuthatch stops for a visit

This summer, as I watch to see which birds are regular neighbors, I have noticed that the Red-breasted Nuthatches are here every day – but I have not seen any White-breasted Nuthatches at all.  Today a flash of white caught my eye through the window and – yes!  There was a handsome White-breasted Nutty poking around my bushes and checking out my feeder.  I grabbed my camera and snuck outside and only managed to get a quick shot before he was gone – but it’s still exciting to know it’s possible to see them in my yard.

Feathers on Friday: Common Raven in my ‘hood

I see Crows quite often in my neighborhood but seeing a Raven is much more rare.  Today I heard one calling loudly and there’s no mistaking that gutteral sound… a Raven!

I found him on a neighboring rooftop and snapped a photo.  One more for my Yard List this year :)

Cedar Waxwing Antics; How I love thee..

The Cedar Waxwings have been having a great time around the yard this summer and I’ve been having a great time watching them!  Sometimes their behavior makes me laugh out loud and often its when I’m trying to take photos and I need to be quiet and still.  When the juveniles begin to fly they often fall from branches that are too small to support their weight. I watch as they fall branch to branch clinging on to the tips of the small branches until they eventually grab a strong enough branch and stop.  It’s a lot like watching a pinball game – only much more fun and much more exciting (and they are SO much cuter than a metal ball to be sure!).

Today the juvie’s were in various trees, watching each other (and their parents) fly from tree to tree and back again. I was taking a few pictures from a stationary spot in the yard when one little guy who was sitting comfortably up in my cherry tree became alert to a commotion in another tree nearby (it turned out to be a squirrel).  He went into the ‘tall thin‘ posture and I couldn’t help it – I laughed – he was very cute and it was quite funny but I still managed to snap before and after photos to share with you below.

Have you ever had a nosy old neighbour – disapprovingly peering into your yard to see what you have been up to in your garden?  This one is hard to be miffed at…lol
