Fab-u-lous Backyard Birding Day!! Cooper’s Hawk Visit

Cue the CSI:Miami Theme Song:

Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!

This is SUCH a great day!  A Cooper’s Hawk came to my yard today – my daughter saw him from the window and being the super daughter that she is – she called me downstairs as fast as she could so I could see him.  I was able to observe the activity from a partially blinded area on my deck.  The house sparrows were making a racket and hiding deep in the bushes as he was watching for them.

Eventually this beautiful raptor jumped to the ground to attempt to get a meal from under the bushes where the sparrows were hiding and chattering.

He wasn’t able to catch a sparrow from the bushes so he jumped back up on the fence and then he saw me as I took the risk of approaching closer… I LOVE this shot!

I got one more portrait of this beautiful creature before he flew away.  Although I was glad he didn’t get a meal in front of me (I know its nature, but I don’t need to see it), I felt a bit sorry for him too.

What a GREAT day to be an urban backyard birder!

Another Rainy Morning – with a surprise Cooper’s Hawk!

As I woke up this morning, I could hear the rain drops fall on the bedroom window.   Bleary eyed, I walked over and opened the curtains.  There wasn’t much light – it was a dull cloudy rainy day.  I peered down toward my feeder and saw some house sparrows having breakfast – then my eyes noticed a large darker spot on my fence at the back of the yard….  I rubbed my eyes and eventually the image of a hawk jumped at me and I shrieked with surprise ( which woke my daughter from her sleep wondering what was wrong).  “Sorry! Nothing’s wrong!” I called as I ran downstairs to get my camera – “but there’s a raptor in our yard right now!”

I was scared he would be gone by the time I was able to grab my Canon, set it for the low light, and sneak out the back door.   I opened my door and was partially hiding behind the closest tree so as not to scare him off.  He was about 30 feet away when I poked my lens around the tree and within a second he saw me so I snapped fast before he flew away.  Needless to say, I was wide awake after that refreshing rain and excitement….  First Raptor in my backyard birding adventures! 😀
